Maria Abeyesekere, born in 1970 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is a self-taught professional painter deeply rooted in her family's artistic heritage. Drawing inspiration from her ancestors' portraits by European painters from the colonial era, Maria's love for figurative and portrait painting flourished from an early age. Her artistic journey took a remarkable turn when she clinched the Best Young Artist award in 1990, opening doors to prestigious projects like the Ian and Roslin Goonetileke Collection. Juggling her passion for painting with her career, Maria made the bold leap to become a full-time artist after settling in the tranquil Central Highlands in 2003. Embracing a wide range of subjects in her art, Maria's talent has earned her global recognition, with invitations pouring in from international galleries and art events worldwide. Noteworthy feats this year include representing Sri Lanka at the upcoming Botanical Art Worldwide 2025 in India and being chosen to showcase her work at the Art Expo New York 2025, alongside other prestigious invitations from Europe.
